Looking to become a Personal Trainer?

Did you know around 80% of Personal Trainers do not continue after 2 years of business? Read more to find out why personal trainers burn-out and how to avoid it as you start your new career.

Let’s first start with: What does being a Personal Trainer entail?

  • Assisting Clients with movements, injury rehabilitation/prevention, & achieving fitness oriented goals

  • Building Workout Programs based on individual needs/goals. A plan is one of the greatest tools in personal training to monitor progress.

  • Educating Clients on relevant fitness topics & research. It’s important to keep up to date within your field to provide your clients with updated resources.

  • Being a mentor, coach, & friend. This job requires significant amount of interpersonal skills, empathy and compassion.

  • Sales & Marketing. While often overlooked are an important part in showing your clients what you are capable of and what you can provide for them.

What Certifications are there?

But which one do I choose? Take your time to research what works best for you and your current goals right now. Things to consider; cost, length of course, what gyms consider it for applications, is it provincially, nationally, or internationally recognized, what are your long-term goals?

So I just got certified… Now what?

When I first started out as a personal trainer the hardest part was just getting started. I was certified, I was confident in my knowledge and skills but I had never trained anyone one-on-one before. One of the biggest challenges was my lack of experience and my own perfectionism.

I was in need of a mentor, and sadly at the time, there were no opportunities for this. One of the best things I ever did was reach out to the other trainers at my gym for support. This changed my perspective and resulted in training my first client with far more confidence. Now that I have been successfully training clients for quite a few years, I wanted to start providing more opportunities for new trainers to be mentored and start their business with confidence & a sense of support from within the fitness community.

So, you’ve started with a good foundation & support system. How do I avoid burn-out?

  • Start with strong boundaries. This means define your lines with your clients (ex. Not answering messages on the weekends etc.). It is always easier to start with boundaries than having to impose them after building a relationship with your client.

  • Prioritize your health. It’s easy to keep taking on clients and overloading your plate when you start out, especially from a profit perspective. However, without necessary recovery for yourself as a coach, it will be impossible to maintain high quality training for your clients and a healthy relationship with your business.

  • Build a supportive community for yourself. Nothing can compare to having friends & colleagues in the same industry helping guide you and your business. Long-term collaboration with other individuals in your industry goes so far to help your business.

When people choose a career as a Personal Trainer they’re choosing to make a difference in someone’s life.
